Event Information:

For our June Garden visit, we are going to High Glannau, Lydart, Monmouth by kind permission of Helena and Hilary Gerrish on June 13th, 2023

Helena will talk about her recently published book on the restoration of Mounton House and its garden. The house was the most ambitious project of Henry Avray Tipping, architectural editor of Country Life. It was built just outside Chepstow and designed without limitation of expense as a perfect expression of his immense knowledge of history, architecture, and horticulture. However, it was completed in 1914 and his ambition for the house was never realised .

For many years it was used by Gwent County Council as a school for delicate children and later sold in 2002. It was then converted into flats until the present owners slowly took possession of the whole building and in 2016 began on the restoration to Avray Tipping’s original design. The renowned garden designer Arne Maynard was commissioned to remake the spectacular gardens.

High Glannau Manor, was another of Avray Tipping’s projects and  Helena will give an illustrated talk about her research and the recording of the restoration.

We are also invited to a tour of her garden which she restored to Tipping’s original design and we will finish with a cream tea.
